The key nuance is the word “subjective.” This May forecast is built from a grower survey and field observations, not from the later-season objective measurement process that historically produced a mid-summer reset. In practice, that means the May number is an early-season signal, not a final deliverable-supply guarantee. Kernel sizing, grade mix, and turnout can still move meaningfully as the season develops.
“Bigger” also needs translation. 2.70B lbs is about 1% lower than 2025, so it is not a year-on-year jump. But it is still a large, exportable crop by trade standards, and it sits close to common handler and analyst ranges circulating at the same time, including midpoints around 2.69B to 2.71B. For buyers, that alignment matters because it reduces the odds of a surprise gap between official sentiment and commercial coverage.
One more structural change matters for 2026 planning. Funding for the objective measurement report ended after an industry decision in December 2025, so the market is leaning more on handler estimates, satellite or evapotranspiration models, and the shipment and position trajectory. The old pattern of waiting for a July “shock number” is less relevant now, which shifts attention to how estimates evolve through summer.
H2 coverage is where this becomes real. The May forecast is early enough that summer heat, water stress, and final kernel fill can change what is actually shippable by size and grade. Confectionery, bakery, and beverage ingredient buyers care less about the headline pounds than about whether the crop delivers the sizing and defect profile their lines are set up to run.
Early heat and spring variability were flagged in trade commentary, and that points to a practical watchlist. The market may end up debating yield stability versus size and grade mix, rather than debating total production alone. That is often where contract disputes and unexpected basis costs show up.
Price implications for Europe
A steady or ample California crop does not automatically mean flat pricing in Europe. European buyers pay a stack that includes FOB value, ocean freight, USD/EUR exchange, and EU compliance costs, and any one of those can move independently of crop size. Even in a comfortable supply year, differentials can widen if the market is short specific sizes, varieties, or blanchable quality.
Europe’s pull on the system is also not theoretical. The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council cites Europe shipments of about 651 million lbs in 2024/25, up 1% year on year. When Western Europe stays active, nearby availability of certain grades can tighten even if the global narrative sounds well supplied.
Italian buyers often feel this through specification spreads. Industrial slicing and dicing grades can behave very differently from snack or whole-kernel specs, and the spread can widen quickly when sizing shifts. If your application is dragées, pralines, or premium inclusions, you should model delivered cost by spec, not by the headline market.
Volatile differentials usually come from mechanics that are easy to miss in a crop headline. After early heat, the market watches whether the size distribution shifts toward smaller counts, whether incidental defects rise, and how handlers manage selling as new-crop approaches. Add EU border risk pricing for mycotoxins, and the delivered cost can diverge sharply between “works for industry” and “works for retail-grade whole kernels.”

Buyers feel this as changes in sizing availability and as different roast behavior, especially when you are trying to hit tight color and texture targets.
Pest pressure is another angle that procurement teams increasingly ask about. Border risk is not hypothetical either. RASFF tracking includes aflatoxin notifications in US almonds, including a 2026 notification in Spain. The takeaway is not that US almonds are broadly unsafe. The takeaway is that European buyers should treat aflatoxin as a managed risk with pre-shipment testing, retention samples, and clear rejection and remediation clauses.

Waiting can be rational when your specs are flexible. Meal, flour, and paste users can often tolerate more variability in size distribution, and staged buying can preserve optionality if early heat leaves uncertainty about sizing and defect rates. The point is not to delay for the sake of delay, but to match commitment timing to how sensitive your process is.
Flexibility can be structured without turning the contract into a loophole. Call-off contracts with monthly releases, tolerance bands on size and substitution rules, and quality holdbacks tied to incoming QA are common tools. Some buyers also split origin coverage to manage compliance and availability risk, especially when lead times and border checks are tight.
Risk management is not only about the nut price. If you buy in USD and sell in EUR, an FX policy matters as much as the FOB level. Freight booking strategy and having contingency lots for Q4 spikes can be the difference between meeting customer programs and paying spot premiums under time pressure.
Logistics and availability
A faster harvest pace can improve availability timing. When field drying and hulling move smoothly, handlers can build receipts earlier, which can open earlier shipment windows to Rotterdam, Hamburg, Genoa, or other EU gateways. That can reduce Q4 congestion risk, but only if quality and moisture are controlled.
Lead times need to be mapped end to end. EU industrial users generally need predictable windows for phytosanitary steps, aflatoxin testing, and port clearance. Build a calendar that runs from handler release to stuffing, ocean transit, EU lab turnaround, and factory intake, then work backward from your production plan.
Container execution is where quality can be protected or lost. Temperature and humidity management, food-grade liners, and moisture control are practical safeguards against mold risk and odor pickup. Packaging choices also matter operationally, with common processor formats including 25 lb cartons and 1,000 kg big bags depending on your intake system.
Port strategy is a commercial lever, not just an operations detail. Diversifying discharge ports can reduce demurrage exposure and give you options if transshipment schedules slip. For critical SKUs like blanchable whole kernels, a buffer stock plan is often cheaper than a last-minute spot purchase.
Will logistics get cheaper if the crop is bigger? Not necessarily. Freight and port conditions can move independently of crop size, so it is worth negotiating both delivered and FOB scenarios and confirming seller allocation policies for peak season.
